Genital herpes can be a difficult problem to deal with any time, more so when you are pregnant or expecting. Your head can be jammed with countless concerns during pregnancy. So herpes is the last thing you need at that point. For a pregnant mother, the safety of her unborn child is the first and foremost concern. According to clinical studies, if a pregnant or expecting woman takes Valtrex valacyclovir tablets to tackle genital herpes, the risk of harm to the newborn child remains same as for a woman not taking the medicine.

Being a category 'B' medicine, Valtrex is probably safe for use during pregnancy. Having said that, not every woman experiences similar situations during pregnancy and what may work for one woman may not work for you. So it is strongly advisable that when you are pregnant or expecting, you should talk to your doctor before taking this drug. You must carefully consider all the potential risks and benefits of a strong antiviral medicine before trying it during pregnancy.

Some studies have shown that taking Valtrex valacyclovir during the last week of pregnancy to suppress the herpes simplex virus should not create any concern for the foetus. But the recommended action on your part, as said before, is to talk to your healthcare provider.

Can Valtrex harm my infant when I am breastfeeding or about to start breastfeeding?
The active ingredient of Valtrex can be passed onto the infant through breast milk. So in case you are breastfeeding, or planning to start breastfeeding, inform your doctor. Let your doctor decide whether or not you should take Valtrex pills while nursing.
